Improving Wi-Fi Coverage and Understanding Broadband Speeds

Tips and fixes to improve Wi-Fi coverage, troubleshoot weak signals, and check broadband speeds for the best home connection.

Updated over a week ago

Broadband vs. Wi-Fi

  • Broadband: The internet connection to your property via your router.

  • Wi-Fi: The wireless network within your property that distributes broadband to your devices.

  • Key point: Broadband speed is guaranteed in your package, but Wi-Fi strength can vary due to distance, obstacles, and interference.

If speeds seem slow only in certain areas, focus on improving Wi-Fi coverage (see below). If speeds are slow even when plugged in via ethernet, contact Bunch support to investigate your broadband connection.

Improving Wi-Fi Signal

  • Signal can be affected by property size, number of occupants, wall thickness, and layout.

  • Router placement matters — a central location improves coverage.

  • Larger or multi-story homes may require mesh Wi-Fi extenders for seamless coverage.

  • Standard Wi-Fi extenders can also help but may create separate networks.

Resolution:

  1. Move the router to a central, elevated position where possible.

  2. Use mesh Wi-Fi extenders for best results across floors.

  3. Minimise obstacles between router and devices (e.g., avoid placing inside cupboards).

Troubleshooting Weak Signal

  • If you have selected a broadband option which includes a 4G data dongle, the white USB dongle should be inserted in the back of your router - without it, performance may drop.

  • A router reboot can resolve temporary signal issues.

  • Forgetting and rejoining the Wi-Fi network on your device can fix connection glitches.

  • If Wi-Fi doesn’t cover the entire property, a Wi-Fi extender is required (not provided by Bunch).

Resolution:

  1. Check and insert the white USB dongle if missing.

  2. Reboot router by turning it off for 30 seconds and restarting.

  3. Forget Wi-Fi on your device and reconnect fresh.

  4. Install a Wi-Fi extender to improve coverage where signal is weak.

Checking Your Broadband Speeds

  • For the most accurate result, test using an ethernet cable plugged directly into the router.

  • Use a site like Speedtest.net for measurements.

  • Testing from Wi-Fi may give lower results due to signal loss through walls/floors.

  • Speed test in multiple locations to identify weak zones.

Resolution:

  1. Run an ethernet speed test to confirm actual broadband speed.

  2. Compare results with your package speed — if wired speed is significantly lower, contact Bunch.

  3. If wired speeds are fine but Wi-Fi is slow, install a Wi-Fi extender or adjust router location.
