Where is my stopcock?

A stopcock is the main tap that controls the water supply to your property. It’s important to know where it is — and that it works — because it’s the only way to stop the water flow in case of a leak or burst pipe.

Why it matters

A stopcock is the master tap for all the water in the property. If a pipe, tap, or toilet starts leaking, turning off the stopcock will immediately cut off the water supply and prevent further flooding or damage.

Typical locations

The stopcock is usually located:

  • Under the kitchen sink, either visible or behind a small cover or access hole.

  • In a utility cupboard near the front door.

  • In a downstairs toilet area or cloakroom.

It generally looks like a large brass tap, often with a round handle that turns clockwise to shut off the water.

If you can’t find or turn it

  • Can’t find it? Contact your landlord or letting agent — they should be able to help you locate it.

  • Found it but can’t turn it? Don’t force it. Let your landlord or agent know so they can arrange for it to be checked and made functional.

📞 Tip: It’s worth testing your stopcock occasionally (turning it off and back on) to make sure it hasn’t seized up.
