Why it matters
A stopcock is the master tap for all the water in the property. If a pipe, tap, or toilet starts leaking, turning off the stopcock will immediately cut off the water supply and prevent further flooding or damage.
Typical locations
The stopcock is usually located:
Under the kitchen sink, either visible or behind a small cover or access hole.
In a utility cupboard near the front door.
In a downstairs toilet area or cloakroom.
It generally looks like a large brass tap, often with a round handle that turns clockwise to shut off the water.
If you can’t find or turn it
Can’t find it? Contact your landlord or letting agent — they should be able to help you locate it.
Found it but can’t turn it? Don’t force it. Let your landlord or agent know so they can arrange for it to be checked and made functional.
📞 Tip: It’s worth testing your stopcock occasionally (turning it off and back on) to make sure it hasn’t seized up.
